According to Industrial Design Association of America, the industrial design is “the professional service

of creating and developing concepts and specifications that optimize the FUNCTION, VALUSE and

APPERANCE of products and systems for the mutual benefits of both user and manufacturer.”

Therefore, the industrial design is NOT ONLY design the appearance of products but also is a COMPLEX,

CREATIVE, and INNOVATIVE design activity for creating ADDITIONAL VALUES to both users and

manufactures.

The consumer

Due to the economic crisis, social tensions, technology evolutions and concerns about the environmental

impact of human activities, the consumer of sports have changed radically their desires and needs

during recent years. Nowadays, the key ingredient to successful new products/services is THE POWER

of CUSTOMER, neither the company promotional activities nor distribution. Thus, we could define the

consumer of sport as Pro-Sumer (professional consumer) who has following characteristics:

• More CONSCIOUS

• Be accustomed to using INTERNET from smartphone for comparing the products performance and

prices

• Mindful the product value offered at THE LOWEST POSSIBLE PRICE

• Desire both PHYSICAL and MENTAL WELLNESS

• Be careful to MAINTAIN GOOD HEALTH (wellbeing)

• Willing to the use the WEARABLE DEVICES to track their performance and to share with others via

social media

• Interested in the ECODESIGN (green Design) products for environmental sustainability

• Eager to experience new emotions that allow him/her to be the PROTAGONIST (action camera,

drones, etc.)

• Fascinated by the UPDATING TECHNOLOGIES which could give him/her better performance

• Attracted by NATURE and everything from it

• Available to SHARE or RENTAL sport’s equipment

Therefore, a proper and professional approach of industrial design, marketing of product and service is

the key to understand the consumer and satisfy them.
