2.1 Economical benefits

Overall the sports sector accounts for 2% of the EU global GDP (US$18.495 trillion 2014) while the total employment generated

by sports activities is 7.3 million-equivalent to 3.5% of the total EU employment.

2.2 Main Findings

The main findings of this Eurobarometer survey on sport and physical activity are as follows:

- 41% of Europeans exercise or play sport at least once a week, while an important proportion of EU citizens (59%) never or

seldom do so.

- In EU, men exercise,play sport or engage in other physical activity more than women. The amount of regular activity that

people do tend to decrease with age, notably 71% of women and 70% of men in the 55+ age groups never or seldom

exercise or play sport.
