78 2025 TSMA The Application of Artificial Intelligence in Sports Tzyy-Yuang Shiang, Ph.D. Chair Professor National Taiwan Normal University In recent years, sensor technology and the Internet of Things (IoT) have become increasingly popular in many fields. Consequently, artificial intelligence (AI) has been widely applied in daily life through various data collection channels. Sports is a prime example of an AI application area. By leveraging AI to enhance athletic performance, reduce injuries, and increase public participation, advanced technology combined with AI-assisted training methods can not only improve athletes’ performance but also provide a better experience for the general public. AI is impacting almost all major sports events, such as the Olympics and major professional sports like the NBA, MLB, and FIFA. This trend shows that coaches and athletes increasingly need AI technology to help them develop smarter training methods. The application of AI in sports is not much different from other fields. The main approach is to use sensor-based systems or video-based systems to collect data during sports activities. AI can fully utilize the data collected on the sports field, and with suitable algorithms, it can provide the critical information needed by athletes and coaches.
